An investigation in New South Wales (NSW) has revealed that individuals who engage in pokies play during the late hours are more likely to exhibit problematic gambling habits.
The Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority (ILGA) in NSW has declared that it will utilize the findings of this research to guide future decisions regarding rules and regulations surrounding late-night gaming activities.
The study, titled “The Influence of Late Night Play on Electronic Gaming Machine (EGM) Player Conduct”, involved a survey of individuals who participated in pokies play during the late hours.
The report discovered that individuals with gambling issues constituted the majority of late-night pokies players. It also observed that two-thirds of individuals who played between 2am and 8am experienced “significant” adverse consequences.
Minimizing gambling-related harm
“As part of our legal obligation to minimize harm associated with gambling, the ILGA will leverage the insights from this investigation to inform future decisions,” stated ILGA Chair Caroline Lamb.
“The ILGA has implemented a variety of measures to minimize gambling-related harm and address concerns regarding applications to expand the accessibility of gaming machines after midnight.
“We have formulated Guideline 16 to assist gaming establishments in reducing harm stemming from gambling after midnight and promoting responsible gambling practices.”
This study was financed by the Responsible Gambling Fund of the New South Wales administration and backed by the NSW Liquor & Gaming Authority, and carried out by Roy Morgan Research. This involves a mandate that all gaming-related applications must be accompanied by a gaming management strategy, which comprises a variety of steps intended to aid licensees in reducing gambling-related damage within their establishments. The ILGA also imposes licensing conditions on gaming-related applications to lessen the dangers connected with gambling-related harm. Sign up for the iGaming newsletter.
