Rocha, a prominent figure in the Indian Gaming Association and host of the “New Normal” program, informs Brandon Busman and Robin Harrison about the trajectory of the California sports betting discussion.
“Illusions and Deception”
“It’s quite disheartening,” Rocha remarked about the new ballot initiative, which he believes is intended to create a division between California gaming tribes and non-gaming tribes. A series of modifications did not make it any more acceptable. “It’s all illusions and deception.
“These individuals aren’t listening because they don’t care. They desire to move forward, and they’re astonished that they didn’t see the Native Americans rushing towards them, showering them with flowers.”
California Sports Wagering: All Paths Lead to Tribes
He clarified that the gaming tribes are not intentionally delaying the gradual progress of sports betting in California.
Support for in-person wagering in California is at best tepid, and enthusiasm for mobile wagering is even lower.
Rocha cautioned that a gradual and consistent strategy, commencing with mobile devices and then revisiting mobile concerns at a later stage, is the sole method to guarantee a secure and enduring market.
Rocha further stated that the new voting measures have disrupted the tribal strategy. The plan had 2024 as the target year to push for 2026. An impending vote conflict could potentially postpone California sports betting.
He believes there’s a prevailing cultural clash where a “prudent approach to sustainable betting” is being misconstrued as an obstructive tactic. California tribes control the state’s gaming sector. Rocha, alongside his business associate Gene Johnson, are commencing efforts to develop a feasible model for sports betting, and they possess a keen understanding of the state’s dynamics.
“We possess a blueprint,” he conveyed to the business sector. “Be quiet, take a backseat, and allow us to navigate.”
