A Victorian Royal Inquiry examining the corporation determined that it had fallen short in safeguarding susceptible players. Adrian Finanzio, legal counsel aiding the Royal Inquiry, stated that evidence revealed widespread deficiencies in Crown’s execution of its responsible gaming guidelines. Essentially, while policies were established, they were not being adhered to. Only after being exposed has Crown pledged a comprehensive restructuring of its responsible gaming program.
Finanzio emphasized that Crown, as a stipulation of its license to operate its Melbourne gaming establishment, possessed the means and capacity to further minimize gambling-related harm but “might have lacked the desire.” This suggests their focus was more on financial gains than safeguarding their clientele.
The investigation revealed that Crown’s legal representatives had corresponded with the commission to convey that its board had endorsed an array of modifications to its responsible gaming program, encompassing increased personnel on the gaming floor and the implementation of time restrictions for players. These are fundamental measures that should have been implemented from the outset.
“Certain measures within the proposed roster of reforms pertain to practices Crown has been engaging in for a period, which appear to be clearly contradictory to promoting responsible gaming,” Mr. Finanzio remarked. He is implying that certain actions undertaken by the company actually fostered irresponsible gambling!
“The alterations now proposed effectively concede that certain practices employed by Crown, including some relatively recent ones, were incompatible with their responsible gaming obligations.” This constitutes a scathing critique of Crown’s practices and demonstrates their inability to regulate themselves.
The Kings Inquiry is applying significant pressure to Crown Resorts. They’ve requested the records from a particular executive gathering, but Crown is delaying.
