Australian Watchdog Cracks Down on Illegal Online Gambling Websites

The Australian media watchdog, known as the ACMA, is taking strong action against unlawful international gaming websites that focus on Australian citizens. They recently instructed Australian internet service providers to restrict access to an additional 18 websites, increasing the overall number to 222 websites blocked since 2019. These websites are in breach of Australian legislation, particularly the Interactive Gambling Act of 2001, and the ACMA received a multitude of grievances regarding them. A few of the prohibited websites encompass Syndicate Casino, iLucki, and King Billy Casino. The ACMA is advising Australians to withdraw their funds from these websites promptly. This action represents just one component of a broader initiative to combat illicit online wagering in Australia, and the ACMA highlights that over 100 unlawful operators have stopped targeting Australians since 2017. The ACMA aims to enhance public awareness about the risks associated with illegal gambling by blocking these websites.

In the wake of confusion surrounding regulations on gambling advertisements, Australia’s media regulatory body issued a firm warning to the nation’s authorized wagering providers in November. The ACMA, short for the Australian Communications and Media Authority, emphasized the need for heightened diligence in advertising practices, particularly regarding the handling of user requests for blocking or opting out. Subsequently, there appears to be a concerted effort by these operators to improve their compliance.
